Caring for paper wallpaper

by California

Paper wallpapers have been known to us since time immemorial. To be more precise, they appeared in Russia at the end of the 18th century. And since then they are in constant demand. It’s probably hard to find an apartment where there would be no wallpaper. Someone is attracted by their low cost, ease of pasting, for others, a healthy atmosphere in the house is more important. Unlike their synthetic counterparts, paper wallpapers allow the walls to “breathe”, thereby preventing fungi and microbes from developing.Over the years of its existence, paper wallpapers have changed a lot. Ordinary single-layer paper wallpapers have a number of disadvantages. The drawing is applied to them in the usual typographical way, and they quickly fade, in the process of gluing they expand from the glue, and when dried they shrink and gaps remain in the seams. And most importantly, the walls for pasting with single-layer paper wallpaper must be perfectly even, because such wallpaper will not only not mask, but even make all the smallest surface defects obvious. Rows of single-layer wallpapers were replenished with corrugated wallpapers (with the application of thick paint) and photo wallpapers. The latter are very popular today. Their sizes and plots are very diverse, which allows you to paste over the walls in whole or in part.Wallpapering options.

Modern technologies allow you to make both single-layer and two-layer (duplex) wallpapers: the inner layer has already passed the additive, and in the future, when pasting, you will not have any “surprises” in the form of bubbles, uneven edges, and so on. In addition, duplex wallpapers are impregnated with a special composition that prevents fading and provides additional moisture resistance. There are many varieties of two-layer wallpaper: embossed, structural, coarse-grained, paintable. Some of them hide small irregularities of the walls. In any case, paper wallpapers are used in rooms with low pollution and low humidity, where frequent cleaning is not expected (bedrooms, living rooms). Although recently they began to apply a special latex layer on paper wallpaper, which makes them more resistant to pollution and makes it possible to wet cleaning.

Paper wallpapers, like any other, require special care, although it is not complicated. For example, to remove dust from them, it is enough to walk over the surface with a dry brush, a vacuum cleaner with a nozzle or a duster. Today, manufacturers make sure that the drawing fades less in the sun, and the paper does not turn yellow over time. A greasy stain on the wallpaper can be removed by ironing the place of contamination with an iron at a moderate temperature through a paper towel. But only fresh stains can be removed well. On light wallpaper, some dirt can easily be removed with a regular eraser. Well, if the manufacturer carefully protected the surface of the wallpaper from moisture with a special coating, then there should not be any problems at all. They’re just shown a wet wipe. But keep in mind that there are wallpapers that are washable and allow wet wiping. These concepts are slightly different. Weekly wet cleaning will keep the original look of the wallpaper for a long time. True, most often washable wallpapers are glued in rooms with high humidity or high pollution (kitchen, bathroom). If you used paintable wallpaper for decoration, then it is the type of paint that determines how suitable the surface is for wet cleaning. If the paint is water-based, then such a surface can be wiped with a slightly damp (well-wrung out) soft cloth. A surface painted with latex or acrylic paint can be safely washed with warm water with the addition of any non-abrasive detergent.
